We just came across a great list of easy steps for reducing the amount of waste and trash you produce on the daily. Something really struck us, though: Along with the list of 15 steps you can take immediately, the sustainable lifestyle blog Honestly Modern hit us with the 5 R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot.

Why are we liking this 5 R’s thing for reducing waste? Because sometimes you just need to prioritize and find practical balance on the fly. And the 5 R’s hierarchy can actually help inform your whole mindset when it comes to keeping stuff in check.

It’s helpful to think about zero waste beyond just producing less trash. Many zero waste experts talk about a hierarchy of the five R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot. Starting from the top, each level of elimination is more powerful than the levels below. Most of us tend to focus on recycling. While this is a really great option, it can take a fair amount of resources to recycle something into a new material we can reuse again. It’s better if we refuse it, reduce it or reuse it first.

But seriously, get with these 15 Steps Toward Zero Waste That You Can Take Today. Our favorites are #14 and #15, and #8 is law in many parts of California already.
